The small word “Now” turns from the confession that closed chapter 3 to the threat that would oppose it. The church had just been called “the pillar and ground of the truth,” and its creed had been sung as the mystery of godliness revealed in Christ. Paul immediately warns that this truth will be contested from within. He grounds the warning in the Spirit, who “speaketh expressly,” that is, in plain and unmistakable terms. Jesus had foretold false prophets who would deceive many (Matthew 24:11, 24), and Paul himself had told the Ephesian elders at Miletus that grievous wolves would come and that some of their own number would draw disciples after them (Acts 20:29–30). Whether the Spirit spoke through those earlier words or through prophets in the congregation, the matter was not left vague.

“In the latter times” points to the seasons following the prediction. The verb is future, yet verses 3–6 show that the danger was already active at Ephesus. Prophecy often speaks this way: what is foretold has begun in the prophet’s own day and will gather strength as history moves toward its close. Paul elsewhere describes a great falling away that must come before the day of Christ (2 Thessalonians 2:3), so every generation of believers must watch, and the last generation most of all.

“Some shall depart from the faith.” The definite article points to the body of truth just confessed in 3:16. Apostasy is the movement of people who once stood inside the church and now step away from its foundation. Such departures are rarely announced as rejection; they usually arrive as refinements, deeper spirituality, or stricter devotion.

The root cause lies behind the human teachers. The apostates give heed to “seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils,” attaching themselves to teaching whose real origin is demonic. The conflict between Christ and Satan reaches into the church’s classroom. The Spirit of truth speaks clearly; the deceiving spirits lead astray. Scripture warns that such deception can include voices claiming to bring knowledge from the dead, and it directs God’s people “to the law and to the testimony” (Isaiah 8:19–20). The safeguard is to test every spirit by God’s revealed word (1 John 4:1).

ῥητῶς (rhētōs) — expressly

This adverb, found only here in the New Testament, means “in stated terms” or “explicitly.” Paul stresses that the coming departure was not a guess or a mood of pessimism. The Spirit had announced it plainly, so the church should not be surprised or unsettled when it appeared.

ἀποστήσονται (apostēsontai) — shall depart

The verb means to stand away from or withdraw. Its related noun is used for the great “falling away” of 2 Thessalonians 2:3. The word assumes a former position inside the faith; it describes people who abandon ground they once occupied, which makes their influence on others especially dangerous.
