2 Timothy 1:1

Paul opens his final letter with the title he has carried since the Damascus road: “an apostle of Jesus Christ.” Timothy hardly needed the information. The title stands at the head because what follows is more than a farewell between friends. It is an apostolic charge that will govern Timothy’s ministry and, through him, the congregations in his care. The prisoner awaiting sentence in Rome still speaks with the authority of the risen Lord who sent him.

“By the will of God” places the origin of that authority outside Paul himself. He did not volunteer for apostleship or earn it by talent. God chose and commissioned him, and that settled conviction steadied him when nearly every human support had fallen away (1:15; 4:16). A calling that rests on the divine will cannot be cancelled by a cell or a verdict.

The next phrase names the purpose of his apostleship: “according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus.” Paul was sent to announce that God has pledged life and has located that life in His Son. The setting gives the words unusual force. Nero’s court could end Paul’s earthly existence, but it had no jurisdiction over the life God promised. That life begins now in union with Christ (Romans 6:4, 11) and reaches its fullness when the dead in Christ are raised incorruptible at His return (1 Corinthians 15:52-53). Paul does not speak of life as something humanity already holds by nature. It is promised, and it is “in Christ Jesus”; apart from Him there remains only the sentence of death that sin introduced.

The greeting therefore anticipates the gospel summary of verses 9-10, where Christ is said to have abolished death and brought life and immortality to light. A man facing the sword begins his last letter by speaking of life.

Word / Phrase Notes

κατ’ ἐπαγγελίαν ζωῆς (kat’ epangelian zōēs) — according to the promise of life

The preposition expresses the aim toward which Paul’s apostleship is directed: he was commissioned in the service of what God has promised. In Paul’s letters God’s promise consistently centers on the salvation fulfilled in the Messiah. Here its content is life itself—fellowship with God now, and resurrection life that will never end.

1 Timothy 4:8

ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ (en Christō Iēsou) — in Christ Jesus

This characteristic Pauline phrase recurs throughout the letter (1:9, 13; 2:1, 10; 3:12, 15). It identifies Christ as the sphere and source of the promised life. Life is not a general religious possession available apart from Him; it is found in union with His person.
