The letter opens in the conventional ancient form—writer, recipient, greeting—yet each element is filled with gospel content. Paul names himself “an apostle of Jesus Christ,” a title he holds by direct appointment from the risen Lord, not by election from any congregation (Galatians 1:1). Timothy hardly needed reminding of Paul’s office. The emphasis serves the church in Ephesus, which would hear this letter read aloud and needed to know that Timothy’s corrective work rested on an authority higher than his own age or temperament.

That authority is grounded “by the commandment of God.” Paul writes as a man under orders. His apostleship was a commission laid upon him, never a career he selected or a status he seized, and the same sense of obligation will shape the charge he passes to Timothy (vv. 3, 18).

Two titles stand out. God is “our Saviour,” language drawn from Israel’s worship, where the Lord repeatedly delivers His people (Psalm 25:5; Isaiah 45:21). In a city where rulers and patron deities were hailed as saviours, the Christian confession was pointed: deliverance comes from the living God alone. Elsewhere in these letters the same title is given to Christ (Titus 2:13), showing that Father and Son share fully in the work of redemption.

Christ Jesus is also called “our hope.” He is the substance of the believer’s future as well as the One who promises it. Biblical hope carries confident expectation, anchored in His resurrection and awaiting His appearing. The joining of God and Christ Jesus under one commandment, together with the shared pronoun “our,” places Paul, Timothy, and every believer under the same Lord and within the same expectation.

ἐπιταγήν (epitagēn) — commandment

The word denotes an authoritative order or injunction. Paul uses it where he wants to stress that a directive comes from God rather than from human preference. Here it grounds his apostleship in a divine mandate, which in turn gives weight to the instructions Timothy must enforce in Ephesus.

ἐλπίδος (elpidos) — hope

In the New Testament hope is settled expectation of what God has promised, far removed from uncertain wishing. Calling Christ Jesus “our hope” identifies Him as both the ground and the content of the believer’s future, which will be fully realized at His return.
